a temporary marketing professional

you know you're a marketing professional when:
you are an expert at lifting giant heavy boxes in heels.
you know avery nametag label numbers by heart.
95% of your project request conversations start with the words, "i know this is last minute but..."
you enjoy watching commercials and you actually look at ads in magazines and newspapers.
you get paid to plan and attend your company holiday party

i like my job 70% of the time.
i consider myself lucky because i know that is probably a lot more than many people feel about their jobs.  but even at 70%, i don't want my job to be the thing that defines me, and i don't want it to be the thing i depend on to bring me happiness.

the other day, i found myself talking to someone who loved their job 98% of the time. he said he hated to call it a job because he loved it so much.
i decided that instead of saying that he loved his job, he should say that he loved the way he spent his days.

i think the things you find your happiness and joy in outside of work,
the i you spend my days or nights or weekends,
are the things that are most important.
for me, that would be bub-hub, my family, the LORD, baking, exercising, and crafting.
these are all things that bring me joy.

i'm kinda glad i don't love my job 100% of the time,
because if i did,
i wouldn't fully appreciate the rest of the wonderful blessings i have in my life.
i wouldn't be motivated to seek out new adventures and experiences,
and i wouldn't have the desire to seek out what the LORD has planned for me next.

praise the LORD my life was meant for more than a 9-5 desk job.
i'm not sure to what adventures my passions will take me,
but i'm confident that right now, the LORD has me in the place i need to be,
even if that means lifting heavy boxes in heels.

"therefore we do not lose heart. though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. for our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. so we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 corinthians 4:16-18

  2. I loved this post! I think you're right, "love the way that you spend your days". If you don't love something, why put time, energy, effort, and {most of yourself} into it?! :)
    great words Sarah, great words!

  3. Okay, so what does Mr. 98% do that he loves his job so much?

Glad you like your job, but that you reserve the joy and passion for the main things in life!mGod, your guy, and your role as wife. That's what keeps the rest of it in check in the season you are in now!

  4. So weird, I literally just had this conversation with my boyfriend last night. I was saying that we always hold off on doing "fun" thing till the weekends, but then our weekends are overwhelming because we end up with so much to do. We need to stop looking at life as work vs non work. We need to wake up and say "hey, today is another day. I have to go sit at a desk for a few hours, but then I get to go pumpkin picking and cook dinner".

I think most people would say they want to love their job 100%, but I'm on your side girl. I never want my job to define me.

  5. I love that quote! You are so right about enjoying the other blessings in life...if work was THAT amazing, would it be so wonderful to come home and bake and craft and do all the things we really enjoy? I think not! You have such a positive attitude...I love it :).
